Psalm 4

Psalm 4

1 Answer me when I call, O God who upholds my cause! Relieve me of my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

2 How long, O mighty ones, will you trample on my honor? How long will you cling to delusion and plunder my soul? Pause

3 But know this: the Lord has chosen for himself those who are godly; the Lord hears me when I call upon him.

4 Tremble and do not sin; reflect in your hearts as you lie in your beds in silence.

5 Offer sacrifices of righteousness and trust in the Lord.

6 Many ask, “Who will enable us to enjoy what is good?” Let the light of your face shine upon us, O Lord!

7 You have filled my heart with joy, a joy greater than that of those who have an abundance of wheat and wine.

8 On peace I lie down and fall asleep right away, for only you, Lord, give me a sense of security.

Comment:

O Psalm Psalm 4 is a night prayer that expresses the psalmist’s trust in God’s justice and mercy. Even in the midst of difficulties and opposition from the powerful, the psalmist cries out to God for relief and hears a hopeful response. He reminds himself and others of the importance of fearing God and living righteously, trusting in His providence. This Psalm reminds us that true happiness and security come from trusting in God and living according to His will. It encourages us to offer sacrifices of righteousness and to trust in the light of God’s face to guide us through the darkness of life. Just as the psalmist finds peace and joy in God, so too can we find rest and security in His presence.
