Corpus Christi Celebration: Sustainable Carpet at Christ the Redeemer Shrine
Corpus Christi celebration: To celebrate Corpus Christi and inaugurate Environment Week, the Archdiocesan Sanctuary Christ Redentor, in Rio de Janeiro, will receive a sustainable carpet for the first time. Assembly will begin on Wednesday evening and the carpet will be open for visitors on Thursday morning. The day's program includes adoration and blessing of the Blessed Sacrament at 7am, in a ceremony presided over by the archbishop of Rio, Cardinal Orani John Tempesta.
The carpets will be made using coffee grounds, sawdust and eggshells, as well as the traditional salt. The works will represent the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN), the Works of Mercy and an image of Our Lady, Queen of Ecology. After the celebration, all the waste will be sent for composting, transforming organic materials into fertilizer.
Environment Week program
The program continues on Monday, National Environmental Education Day, with the event "Cristo G20 Committee on Environmental Education", part of the Cristo G20 Seminar, which will discuss Environmental Education and Sustainability in the context of the G20.
On Wednesday, World Environment Day, a Mass will be held at 10am, organized by the Vicariate for the Environment and Sustainability of the United Nations. Archdiocese do Rio (Vemas) and presided over by the episcopal vicar, Father Josafá Carlos de Siqueira. At 6pm, the book "Environment: Reflections, Legacies and Memories", written by Father Josafá, will be launched at the Parish of St. Josafá. On Thursday, at 3pm, the Vital Brasil Institute will hold a training session on venomous animals for the staff of the Christ the Redeemer Sanctuary. At 7pm, a special projection on the Christ the Redeemer monument will show phrases of the Encyclical Laudato Si', of the Pope Francis, linking the protection of the environment to care for our common home and highlighting humanity's moral responsibility towards nature.
Interfaith carpet in Rio's Metropolitan Cathedral
At Rio's Metropolitan Cathedral, located on Avenida Chile in the center, there will be an interfaith salt carpet promoted by Expo Religion. This carpet will be made for the fifth time and the design will call for peace between the people. religionsThe event will be attended by 28 leaders from the Religare Institute. The president of the institute, Luzia Lacerda, said that 45 kg of coarse salt and 5 kg of fine salt had been purchased to complete the work, which will begin at 5am.
Next to the cathedral, from 5pm, the "Auto do Corpo de Deus" will be staged. This free event is part of the traditional Corpus Christi procession and is directed and written by Luis Fernando Bruno. The show depicts the lives of saints such as St. George, Saint St. Anthony, St. Therese, St. Clare and St. Tarcisius, focusing on their mystical experiences with the EucharistThe show will feature scenes interspersed with songs from the devotional songbook and popular religiosity. After the performance, Bishop Orani will preside over a solemn Mass.
